Where It All Began

Baird & McGregor’s story began in 1898, when Robert Baird established the firm in Ballarat.

The original parchment recording Robert Baird’s admission to practise law remains displayed at our office at 9 Lydiard Street North, a lasting reminder of the firm’s longstanding commitment to professionalism, integrity and service to the Ballarat community.

1910
A Growing Practice

In 1910, Robert was joined by his brother Matthew, and the firm became known as Baird & Baird.

This marked an important period of growth for the practice as it expanded its legal services and continued to support individuals, families and businesses across the region.

1947
Continuing Legacy

In 1947, Kenneth Baird, Robert’s son, joined the firm and continued the family tradition.

His involvement strengthened the firm’s long-established presence in Ballarat and its reputation for providing dependable legal advice to generations of local clients.

1960s
The McGregor Name

In 1960, Bill McGregor commenced his legal career with the firm as an articled clerk.

By 1962, he had become a partner and the firm adopted the name Baird & McGregor — the name it continues to carry today.

1985
A New Generation

In 1985, Andrew Baird joined the firm, continuing the Baird family’s long association with the practice.

His involvement helped preserve the firm’s core values while supporting its continued development through a period of change and modernisation.

2001
Strengthening Leadership

In 2001, Neale Gribble joined Baird & McGregor as a Director.

Over the years, Neale has become a longstanding and respected member of the firm, known for his considered approach and commitment to client service.

2019
Two Ballarat Legacies Unite

In 2019, Baird & McGregor incorporated Cuthberts Barristers & Solicitors, bringing together two long-established Ballarat legal practices.

Cuthberts’ history in Ballarat dates back to the years following the 1855 Eureka Rebellion. The incorporation brought together firms with shared values, strong community ties and a longstanding commitment to serving clients across Ballarat and regional Victoria.

2022
A New Chapter

In 2022, Tom Keightley was appointed Director and now serves as Managing Director of Baird & McGregor.

His appointment marked the next stage in the firm’s development, with a continued focus on practical, client-centred legal services for individuals, families and businesses.

Today, Baird & McGregor continues to serve clients across Ballarat, Daylesford and regional Victoria.
